All the snails in my axies tank have died :S
They're only the tiny ones but all the shells are over the floor. He isn't eatting them is he???

Are the shells going to effect the water?

They may have died off if the water quality has deteriorated too much, so check the parameters . Having said that when my axolotl where younger they did eat the smaller snails and then passed the shells..these looked paler .

My axolotls ate small planorbis snails to near extinction. I hardly ever saw them eat one but the droppings disintegrated into piles of pale shells. For a time one of mine refused all offered food but looked healthy, well fed and grew, which puzzled me.

The shells may slightly raise water pH but will not take it outside the range which is fine for axolotls.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
