How do axolotls turn when they swim? It looks very clumsey when they turn. Is it just from thrusting their body about while swimming?

Their tail acts a little bit as a rudder, but they're really not the most graceful swimmers. I've likened them to doing the 'doggie paddle'.

That and it's not like they have the best eyesight. Mine tend to "push off" from one thing to another as they swim. Almost like a crisscrossing between plants and ledges.

In watching my own, I would say that the younger ones are better swimmers. They hold their legs against their bodies and use their tails and bodies for swimming. They are quite agile in comparison to the adults. The adults wiggle the area by the back hips to wave their tails, but use their feet a lot more for swimming - like Kaysie wrote, a "doggie paddle". To turn, they seem to lead with the head and let the body follow.

You really have to love an axolotl to see their way of movement as "graceful".

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
