Very cute! They don't look underfed, but could do with putting on a bit of weight maybe. I am sure they will be very happy! Aussies love their axies!

Yes not overfeeding will help with nitrates as will plenty of regular water changes. I'm sure with regular feeding their bellies will soon plump up. I wasn't implying you were under feeding them, just that their bellies look a bit hollow.

Awesome Axolotls.

If you can afford:
- Put in some plants (plastic or real)
- Aquarium backing adds a nice atmosphere.

To keep water quality:
- 20-30% Water Changes about once a week.
- Check and remove any uneaten food or waste every 1-2 days.
- Water temperature can affect the rate at which bacteria works. Keeping your tank at about 16-18C is good (not everyone has air conditioning, chillers, heaters or live in countries of mild temperature so that may not be possible)
Also, test the water every 3-4 weeks to ensure the water quality is still ok.

I'm probably being a bit pedantic.

If you could put in not real or plastic plants, that would be good for the axies. Go to a pet shop and ask for the artificial ones that feel silky.

Real plants need artificial light which can heat up your tank, this could cause stress for the axies. Also, axies tend to rip the leaves and this would create mess and you would need to clean constantly.

Axolotls like to swim between plants and the plastic plants sometimes can have sharp edges and this could cause harm to your axies.

I hope this helps you!
