Winter Food

Hi all! I have one c. orientalis that has been doing great eating chopped worms I find outside. However, winter will be setting in and pretty soon I won't be able to get to worms through the feet of ice and snow we get here in Iowa. Any ideas about what Fred can eat through the winter? I thought about a worm bin, but we are trying to sell our house, and I don't want the trouble and risk of a potentially smelly, drippy box of dirt, poop, food waste and worms to detract from my house. :)

What can I buy that is inexpensive, available in small quantities, and appropriate food for a low-energy newt? I live in a relatively large city with several large pet store chains etc, so that shouldn't be a problem.

You can stock up on worms (I buy mine at walmart year-round) and store them in the fridge. I've had worms last a couple months. You can also try to find blackworms or waxworms, which will work in a pinch.
 
I stock up earthworms in fridge as well. When I run out of it, I will start feeding bloodworm until earthworm became available in bait shop again.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
