Currently I have 2 Cynops orientalis (Chinese Fire bellied newts) in a 20 gallon tank that is filled up to about 2 inches (from the top of the substrate to the water level) with water. Lots of Java moss is in the water and they have a small hideaway. They also have a large rock that sticks out of the water as a "land area" but they do not go on it much anymore. Currently, they are about 3 inches long from their snout to the end of their tail. Are they adults yet, and should I heighten the water level?

I just want to know what water level I should have for 3 inch C. orientalis. Are they ready for a more aquatic setup (more water and plants)?

3 inches long is about a full growth adult size. In this case, you should be able to set the water level as high as 90% full. That is what I do with my newt. I am keeping them almost fully aquatic when they were only just juvenile (1.5 inch).

You can try to keep a land area using floating platform (turtle dock), just in case they want to stay on land. make sure that your aquarium is escape proof as well.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
