First off, I'm not putting this in the sickness forum because I don't think the Axolotls are sick, just morphing out.

Is there any evidence that consistently high temperatures (76-78F) can cause an axolotl to undergo metamorphosis?

Now before you start berating me on bad husbandry practices, the situation is sometime I came into and working to remedy it. I have a total of 5 axolotls in 4 separate tanks. About 2 weeks ago they all started loosing their gills. At first I thought it could be the feeder fish, but when the axolotls with no fish in the tanks started loosing gills I knew it had to be something else. There are several other options that I'm having tested for but I'm also looking into if temperature is an issue. Behavior wise, there hasn't been much change. All of the axolotls are still eating as before.

With 5 axolotls showing the same symptoms, I really doubt it's spontaneous metamorphosis. It's probably stress from the heat causing gill loss.

Or else he has larval tigers, not axolotls.

Where did you get them, SalSa? Are you sure they are axies?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
