Due to the imminent collapse of my Canadian nightcrawler farm. I'm looking into getting a new type of worm. I purchased European nightcrawlers online before, but received instead red worms. As a result I'm quite cautious about buying worms online. I was wondering if anyone would recommend a place to buy European nightcrawlers.

Also, I see a few places are offering African nightcrawlers. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with these. There isn't too many posts about them, and I was thinking about trying them out. Thanks.

I've never kept them, but I hear that African night crawlers need to be kept above freezing, they breed faster than red worms, and are larger than European night crawlers. Perhaps they will grow too large for your needs (4-8 inches)? They're supposed to also be the best compost worm if you can keep them warm.:D

Where did you get your worms last time?

I've heard that the African worms are harder to keep, as they are more likely to head for the hills (crawl away from the bin). And I think I recall reading that they breed slower than redworms. There are various articles online, but it's been some time since I read them.

I don't remember who I got my "European nightcrawlers" from last time. It was too long ago and I've lost the information, which is why I was hoping to get a vendor recommended.

Well, after doing some research I decided to go with some African nightcrawlers. More or less, because there seems to be a lot of conflicting information on them out there. So it sounds like a fun project. Size isn't a problem for me. Actually the bigger the better for my salamanders. I'll keep the forum posted how it goes. I look forward to a worm that should compost a little better than Lumbricus terrestris.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
