Ok so me and my step-dad went out looking for those alright-sized plastic fish tanks because I want to get a newt. We are walking past a LFS and noticed it has a new reptile section above the shop and we thought they might have newts there. So we walk in and about 5 minutes after looking at the fish I notice an Axolotl on the counter. My mind is blown because I thought these were pretty rare. After showing my mom and step-dad, instead of getting a newt we might get some of these. I need some questions answered though:

1. The gold coloured one on the counter had kinda white patches on it's body but mainly it's tail. Is this fungus or something?

2. How common is it that they will reach around 30cm? The ones in the shop were about 10-13 cm.

3. Are they easy to breed?

We are going to look at some tanks today to measure them up. I will post some measurements up later and it would be great if you could tell us if they could fit two in.

Thanks for reading!

Usually white patches are coloration. Fungus looks like fuzzy spots over a wound.

30cm is pretty big. But 25cm is the norm.

They're usually pretty hard to keep from breeding. Unless you have two males (or two females), but even then, two males will occasionally drop spermatophores for each other, you know, just in case. lol.

You will need at least a 30 inch tank to keep two of them. The cheap-o plastic tanks are not going to cut it. Have a look at www.axolotl.org for the basics.

Thanks for the reply.

After alot of rearranging we thought it would be best to get just one. I cleaned out my fish tank and set it up for an Axolotl. My water was already cycled while doing a water change with colder water aswell. Lowered the water and took out a few plastic plants and swapped my driftwood round to make it like a cave, getting all ready to buy one in a weeks time.

We went out to look at the stock they had and noticed they had only three left and two were already sold: a black one and a albino one. We asked if they were getting anymore and they said they might, it's up to the manager or something along those lines so we thought we best grab the last albino one they had. It's a beautiful white with red/goldy eyes.

I took it home and floated it in it's bag for a while and let it loose leaving the light off. About 5 mins ago now I decided to feed it some frozen bloodworms. I got a little dish thing and pushed it into the ground as a food bowl thing for it. I kinda thawed about the cube and put it in his little dish. He was gobbling the ones that had floated off somewhere so I sucked some back up and stuck them in my ADF tank.

I will post pics of him tomorrow to see if someone can ID it as a boy or girl because I dont like calling he/she it.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
