Over new year I will be away for 5 days. I have 4 axolotls, 2 in a 3 x 2 ft tank, 2 in a 3 x 1 ft tank, with filters. Seeking advice over what to do with them over the break:
1) clean tanks thoroughly, and leave them unfed for 5 days in their tanks
2) "fridge" them in my absence
3) take them with me, and house them in temporary two 1 ft tanks once at holiday venue (no filters)
Thanks for any advice.

Option one.

Axolotls (even younger ones) are just fine for a week or more if kept cool. I accidently left some young larvae (less than a month old) for 9 days (a mix up with the sitter and keys and such), and they were fine. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS THOUGH! But just a few days is fine.

Thanks for the advice -- that's what i'll do :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
