A pair would probably be alright in a standard 10 gallon, although a 20 gallon long would provide more room, as these are rather large and robust newts.

Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma tigrinium)
A single adult tiger salamander would be fine in a standard 10 gallon.
Axotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)
Axolotls are a bit different- they can grow rather large and prefer a good amount of space. One would be alright in a 10 gallon, but the water quality would probably stay more stable in a 20 gallon long, which would also provide more room.
Marbled Salamander (Ambystoma opacum)
A single adult would do fine in a 10 gallon.
Emperor Newt (Tylototriton shanjing)
A single adult, again, would also be fine in a 10 gallon.

For most a 10 gallon tank will suffice, however it seems the 20 gallon long tanks are much more versatile and allow more floor space.

Good Luck!

This should hopefully answer your questions; If you use the search function, there are quite a few threads that discuss tank size, particularly for axolotls.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
