Hello all,

I'm new here, and to the salamander hobby. But I've been keeping tree frogs for a while now, so I'm not a complete amphibian "noob". Anyway, I thought i wanted to keep a lugubris, but I've discovered that they need a cool/cooler environment, which is a change from my frogs. My question is, what are some methods to keep sallys cool? I've read they need a temp from 55-68??
 
Unfortunately nearly all caudates require colder temperatures than your average frog. Since the majority of frogs in captivity are tropical and caudates prefer predominately temperate or montane habitats.

Actually, unless you try to breed them you will never need to drop them into the 50s. Anything below 72F is fine, just as long as there is no direct sunlight. Mine have actually gotten up to 80F for a day or two accidentally and they did fine, but of course that's not recommended. If you have a serious problem with summer temps, you could reverse their cycle and over-winter them (in the summer) in your refrigerator. I use to do this with E.lucifuga and a few others.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
