Hello all,
Just wanted to say hi, I'm very glad to of found this forum and that the salamander/newt community has it's own big forum and not some sub forum on a reptile site or something! Hehe. Anyways, I have just recently gotten back into the hobby. My girlfriend started bugging me months ago about getting some sort of pet. And I ultimately decided a little fire belly newt would be a good choice. I had some as a kid and remember them being very easy to care for. But now as an adult I kinda found a new appreciation for caring for these little guys, did a bunch more research and set out to make the best posible habitat for one. The book I bought has taught me a great deal but nothing will compare to the knowledge on this forum. :) I've had tons of pets over the years like turtles, chameleons, geckos, iguanas, so on and so forth. But each species is it's own and I'm glad I studied up as much as possible because so far so good with our newt. Before I go on and on here i'll cut myself off lol. So on behalf of my gf and me HI!

Heyy Akron and his GF.

Hope you learn a lot.

Hi Nphec,

Sounds like you've hit the tip of an addictive iceberg and are off to a great start. Welcome to the Forum!

This past fall I went through Akron and stopped at the zoo. It was awesome, I loved the remodeling of it. You're lucky to have such a great zoo!

Thanks for reminding me actually, we're actually gonna go to the zoo for valentines day. Well the Cleveland one, only cause we have a free night at a hotel near there. But I defo plan on going to the Akron zoo when the weather breaks. I'm glad you enjoyed at least some of your time in Akron, I think most people don't haha!

I went to the Cleveland zoo after the Akron zoo, and that night, man, my feet were killing me!!!

Haha i bet! Can't wait to check out the rainforest again.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
