Hey all just thought I would show you my tank set up with my DIY filters. They seem to do pretty darn well and I havn't found a solid particle in my tank since I put them in.

I got this, get some PVC, some filter wool, some activated carbon, some foam and an air filter. Then I would clog up one of the ends with the foam (it's a very tough foam, it doesn't break for those that thought that) and then I layer wool, carbon, wool, carbon etc until it is full. Then I cut out another stopped for the other end, put an air-line size hole in it or an airstone and VOILA:

That is neat! The filter could be disguised as practically anything, I suppose.

That is pretty damn cool man, I had an idea today for a DIY breeding tanks setup and Ill post pics whenever i have it done, I'll more likely use it to breed fish instead of axolotls though but it would work for both and would be very cheap!

Cheers for the compliments.
Yeah I'm using this filter in my Betta breeding tank as most others seem too powerful. I just have a porous plastic cover so water movement is minimal but filtration still occurs for the whole tank.

Eg:

As you can see most of the surface is not agitated which will promote the males building their bubble nests.

Very cunning idea. There's someone on YouTube with a video of making his own filter from a coke bottle.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
