Hi all,
I'm getting my first axies in a couple of weeks and i have a question about food, i'd like to use a feeder fish colony (guppies) but the axies i'm getting will be about 3 inches will they be too small to eat fish or should i stick to something smaller, if so what sort of size could they eat fish?

Any help appreciated, i want everything prepared for my new arrivals!!!:D

At the size they are currently at they should be able to take guppy fry with no problems. Even when the axolotls reach adulthood they'll still find the occasional adult guppy quite tasty. I would advise starting your own breeding colony because fish recently purchased could possibly be harboring parasites, which could be transmitted to your axolotl.

Hi Immehere,

It is good to start early and have your breeding stock of guppies set up. They will come in handy especially when your axies get older.

At 3 inches, your axie would probably be able to only eat guppy fry as justin suggested. You might like to consider other food types as well, afterall a variety of food will ensure better nutrition. Bloodworms and blackworms will be the perfect size for smaller axies. You can also try tiny earthworms or chopped up earthworms as well.

Cheers.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
