Several years ago we found a California Newt crawling around a street on the Oregon Coast. We took him home and now we are wondering if it would be okay to return it back to the wild? Currently we hand feed him. Also its still cold out on the Oregon Coast but we do plan on returning him to the location where we found him. Should we wait? Can they lose the instinct to hunt?

Why are you thinking about returning it?
There are many reasons not to.
-It may be illegal.
-It may transport foreign pathogens into wild systems. Even if your newt doesn't look sick, it could carry something that it got while in captivity that will make others sick.
-Your animal is probably habituated to people.
If you've had the animal for years, but you don't want to keep it any more, you can always offer it to someone else instead of potentially creating an environmental issue by rereleasing it.

Thorninmyside:Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation+1
