I wonder if anyone could tell me what species is in this photograph. The newt doesn't belong to me, but he belongs to a friend.

Thank you in advance for your help.

That´s an Ommatotriton for sure. I´m doubting wether it is o_Ophryticus or O.vittatus because the colours are confusing.

Edit: I´m pretty sure it is o_Ophryticus.

I agree, it's a banded newt (Ommatotriton). Did your friend just buy it recently? This is a difficult species to keep alive.

Unfortunately I am not sure of any of the details, but I do think it is a recent purchase by a friend of someone I know. He asked me on his friend's behalf because he and I share a common passion for reptiles and amphibians and he thought I would know the right people to ask.

Any care information you could pass along would be greatly appreciated, as I think unfortunately the newt was purchased before researching basic husbandry. Thanks so much for your help and advice!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
