I just noticed white secretions from my tigrinum and heavy weight loss and he seems to be dying. Has anyone seen this before or have any ideas?

I have had two situations where I have seen white secretions on my tigers. The first time was when I found one of my tigers (seemed healthy) burrowed deep in the substrate suddenly dead. The tiger seemed to "sweat" a white secretion all over its body when I found it. The second time was shortly after the first one died, another tiger had extreme weight loss, seemed to be raw under its belly and also had problems shedding. After I moved him into quarantine for a couple of weeks and soaked him in treated aged water daily he made a great turnaround. While I was placing him in the soaking sessions and gently wiping the dead skin off of him, his tail and dorsal area would also secrete white material. The material was very sticky and seemed to repel water. I assume that both of these events where the secretion of the toxic that tigers have to protect themselves from predators.

This is strictly an assumption but I believe the relatively sudden secretion of the toxin can be a sign of excessive stress or sickness. I believe the main cause of the deaths/sickness I experienced was excessive moisture/not enough ventilation, and a buildup of waste in the enclosure. I have changed setups and not had any recurring problems.
I hope this helps a little.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
