Hi i've been looking over the sight and getting a lot of very useful information. I currently have 3 axolotls for a year and a half now i have always been interested in many amphibians and have possessed firebelly newts and a mudpuppy or two in the past plus the many indigenous frog and toad species that i have lived around. As for the three Axolotls that i have( one albino and two dark ones) i bought them from a guy i found though craigslist.org when they were smaller and they have grown and thrived but after reading the posts i realize that i only have them in a 20gallon and need a much larger tank, unfortunately i am unable to afford one at the moment. But i was wondering if i switched to a sand substrate(currently using medium sized rocks) will my Marineland Penguin Power Sponge Filter break because of the sand?

Thanks and nice to meet everyone

Welcome, Derm. I don't think the sand will affect your filter. Just be careful not to stir the sand up from the bottom right next to the filter intake (like when pouring in replacement water, for example).

You will need a larger tank, so start budgeting, and watch for used ones.

Check your PM box, I sent you a message.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
