Hey everyone!

What are some great feeding methods...i read the post to Sparticus. I have 2 new axies and I need to get them used to feeding. They arrived Friday and have yet to eat. They are both healthy and came from the Univ of kentucky. They are 8-12cm.

Also please refer me to an article that can help me with the how much and how often of feeding. I read the one on axolotl.org about what to feed. I have the Univ of kentucky pellets and some earthworms.

PS the set up is good I got the specs for it from Rayson...who I must mention is great with advice and i hope he answers this post.

Thank you for your support! Their names are Axel(normal) and Rose(white)...ROCK ON!

Hi Wyogirl,

Have a look at these links.

The frequency and amount of food you need to feed your axies depends on their age, the temperature, breeding and health status and the types of food.

Your axies should be juveniles/adolescents if they are about 12cm. There is still definitely room to grow so they would need to be fed more frequently than full grown adults. What temperature are you keeping your axies? At warmer temperatures, they would require more feeding.

Frequency wise, i would try around 3 to 4 times a week. Try handfeeding them the earthworms and see how many they take. One or 2 medium/large earthworms per axie is more than enough. You can offer them the axie pellets (try 4 pellets each) on alternate feeding days if you want to expose them to a variety of food. There is a tendency that once an axie tastes yummy earthworms that it might reject pellets unless famished. As usual remove all uneaten food promptly after feeding time.

Cheers

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
