Re: 3 legged axolotl

Hi everyone,

I've had my axie for a few month but when I got him he had a deformed front leg (has a few toes growing out of his elbow). Would this be because he had lost his leg and it grew back deformed? He's fine and eats well, I was just wondering if he was unlucky to develop like this or if it's common?

Re: 3 legged axolotl

Hi Mandy,

Regeneration in axolotls is not always perfect and depending upon age, environment and water conditions, the limb will usually grow back, but sometimes not to the original standard.

Sometimes the axolotl can even get a little carried away during the regenerating process and will grow 'extra' limbs and appendages, making for a truly special and unique axolotl.

One of my axolotls has a front leg which has grown back 'twisted', her 'palm' is facing upwards, looks quite bizarre. She is the greediest of the greedy, and this crippled leg in no way inconveniences her, she's often the first to the worm hunting ground ;)!

That's good to hear that it won't hinder him. His other front leg is also twisted and the palm is facing upwards, poor guy. I've attached a few photos for you to have a look (bit blurry sorry) :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
