Hi everyone.I just came home and noticed my axie floating with his tail up and head down like an i shape (without the dot) so I turned on the lights to his tank to take a closer look, and he swam away and now he looks normal. This has alarmed me because I am going on a holiday for two weeks and I can't cancel it.Can anyone tell me what happened?

My axolotl floats sometimes. Most of the time he is fine on the bottom of the tank yet today it looked like he was having trouble getting to the bottom. He used to do this and I thought I had stopped it when I turned off the bubblers but now he is doing it again. Can anybody help me?;)

Starting your own thread would be best.

If its just the but floating it could be it needs to poop - if it's struggling to get to the bottom it could be full of air. What do you feed & how much / how often. It could be that you need to give it a good feed.

What are your water parameters & temperature? They are always good to check so you can rule them out as being the cause of floating. Does your tank have gravel or stones large enough to ingest? If so change to sand or leave the tank bare bottomed - post a pic of your tank & axolotl so we can see of something else might be a problem.

I feed my wild type juvenile axolotl 1 small red wiggler every night. My tank is bare bottomed with 2 large river pebbles and 2 small fake plants and 1 large fake plant. I am still working to get the ammonia level down just a little bit more but the rest is pretty good. the temp of the tank is 62 degrees Fahrenheit. But today when i came home he was fine walking on the bottom.

Mine do that when they need to poop, or when they have an air bubble in their belly that wants to get out from the back. And suddenly *ploop* it's gone.

So are you saying I dont have to worry about it? And can the air bubble come out their mouth? I was also wondering how you create or start your own post.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
