hiya chaps,

I got my axie (mudkips) 2 weeks ago.
He is now living in one of my spare tanks-2 ft *1*1, 10 gallons I think. I have put aquarium sand on the bottom. I have an in the tank type filter and 1 airstone with pump to provide the air.

I thought Id give him some guppies to eat, so I scooped a few guppies out of my guppy tank (6 or 7), just my luck they all seemed to be gravid! so now there about 30 guppies in with mudkips!

He eats the occasional guppy, but as I keep him stuffed with earthworms the guppies are fairly safe.

I absoloutley love owning him, I spend hours on a chair in front of the tank just watching him.

However I have a problem. On the left side of his head, near the middle gill 'feather' is what looks like a red worm. It is about 4 mill long. on that side his gills are always curled up and are fairly small.

I know you will want to see a pic, but my mobile is at the shop getting repaired, does anyone have any idea what it can be?

thanks everyone

Hi Doris,

Would you be able to take a photo and post it up? Some parasites like anchorworms can resemble worm dangling off the gills or skin.

Cheers

I dont think it is a parasite, it looks like some kind of growth.

Mudkips has had it ever since I got him, about 2 weeks ago.

As I said my Nokia n96 is at the shop (cos I ran into a crowbar when the phone was in my shirt breast pocket!) I pick up my new one tomorrow.

Also is it okay to keep guppies with mudkips? They are supposed to be eaten by him, but can they hurt him?

In theory the axolotl is supposed to eat the guppies, I feed mine guppies but I have one male guppy that has eluded capture and has resided in the tank since before Christmas. The guppy tends to keep well away from the axolotl. Do be careful that you are not over feeding your axolotl, depending on size it may not need feeding more than a couple of times a week.
What colour is Mudkip?

Hi Doris,

Does Mudkips have any other signs of ill health or stress or any unusual behaviour? If Mudkips is merry as can be and just happen to have that worm like growth, it could very well just be a benign 'side effect' of regeneration and healing. A photo would definitely be useful though.

Cheers

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
