I found this website and forum while researching how to give an Axolotl the best home and living conditions.

I'm 38, live in London, UK with my fiancé, own my own business making jewellery and recently had to re-home my two parrots because they made my fiancé very sick as he was allergic to them.

Whilst mid-mope about getting rid of our beloved Parrots (and my nagging about getting a Chameleon) we spotted an Axolotl on a tropical fish forum and found out that we'd both always wanted one since seeing them in our respective high schools Science laboratories in a tank.

So, we decided we'd like to get one (maybe two) but not until we move house which gives up lots of time to learn all about the funny little things and how to best care for them.

We already own a large 4' tank for tropical fish so we know about water conditions (despite axolotls not being tropical) but we got so much conflicting advice about substrates and food we decided to find out about everything in a bit more detail

Hi Stripy Socks,

There's no faster way to an axolotls heart than a nice juicy earthworm.

The easiest substrate to keep clean (and the safest for axolotls) is a barebottom tank. If you prefer the 'natural' look however, then sand is the next best thing. Gravel smaller than two centimeters in diameter can be swallowed by the axolotl (their mouths are huge) and this can be fatal.

There is a wealth of information in the Axolotl section of the forum, and many helpful care articles are linked below in my signature bar for your reading pleasure ;).

Welcome to the site!

Welcome to the site :D

As said above, is a lot of information to be found here and you can learn a lot from the continual experience of the other members

I'm sorry to hear about your parrots :( You must love your OH very much ;) hehe

Good luck with the move and the eventual new house memeber/s

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
