Now it's my turn to ask a general question about T. verrucosus:

My pair went aquatic last January and laid eggs around July. For the last month, they've spent a lot of time hauled out, so I put them back in their 50/50 (land/water) tank, and now they're both being terrestrial! I thought that once they went aquatic, that was that. Or not? Does anyone know more about their aquatic/terrestrial habits? Is this some type of pre-egg laying behavior?

As far as i know they are highly aquatic. Perhaps your animals are from a specific population that has a more terrestrial habit?
Is the aquatic area big enough? and deep enough? Maybe they choose to be terrestrial because something´s wrong with the water area.

They like the water a lot. Some of my adults staid in the water year round. Some liked to come on land for part of the year. They will go back to water soon to breed and probably stay there for most of the year.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
