Re: new axolotl owner

I was just wondering how much food I should be feeding my axolotl ? I have blood worms and axolotl pellets but am not sure how much to use, also my axolotl does not seem very keen on the pellets.

Hi there,

Depends on how old your Axolotl is - I assume juvenile, as you're feeding bloodworm. If so, feed daily - make sure your Axolotl looks nice and full (head width - roughly same as stomach). As for amount, play it by-ear ~ gauge on how much is left over.

Some Axolotls can take a while to take to pellets; try a few before you feed the bloodworm (remember to take the pellets out if they've not been eaten).

Earthworms are best - I find it is best to introduce a variety of food at an early age. Worms, slugs and woodlice are favourites with my lot, with a few pellets and a couple of prawns (and the occasional pinkie) evey now and then.

Cheers, Phil

Thanks, Phil. That's been really helpful. Yeah it's a juvenile, thanks for the tips.

Graham.

Hi Graham

I agree with Phil. Axolotls are opportunisitic feeders and will usually eat as often as they can.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
