Hello everyone at Caudata!

My name is Graeme and I've been keeping and breeding newts & salamanders since I was a child, an interest I inherited from my dad. After a few years off I have decided that I am now in a position to re-engage with my passion of amphibian keeping as I am buying a house with a large out-house or more precisely, newt house. This will allow me to keep the species I want, under ideal conditions and have space to rear the young. My ultimate goal is to provide quality UK captive bred animals, lessoning the need for wild caught animals! My primary interest lies with the newts (formerly) of the genus Triturus but also hope to lend my expertise to the stud book currently being established for Neurergus kaiseri.

Well, that's about it for now. See you all around!

Thanks Frank. It's nice to be a part of the community!

Hi Graeme,

Welcome to the site! We're looking forward to seeing pictures of your newt-house when built :D.

And it goes without saying that we'd love to see pictures of your amphibians too.

As soon as the newt house is completed I shall be posting some pictures! If it measures upto my complicated and ambitious plans it should be pretty spectacular. We'll see!

Of course the inhabitants of said newt house will take the starring role and hopefully their offspring will be available next spring/summer. Again, it's a game of wait and see!

Thanks for all the encouragement guys!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
