Hi

I have some freshly morphed palmate newts (very small) and some alpines, what is the best food for these new morphs as they have been feasting on daphnia and small bloodworms in the recent aquatic stage.

To some extent, the answer depends on whether you are able to keep the morphs semi-aquatic, or whether they need to be raised terrestrially. In the case of the alpines, this may depend on the subspecies (M.a. apuanus tend to be able to be raised aquatically, and maybe some of the other subspecies also can). I'm not familiar enough with palmate newts to have a clue about which housing they need.

These pages may help get you started:

and hopefully some other folks can give you some advice on whether or not to try raising these juveniles semi-aquatic versus terrestrial.

i would suggest white and black worms, springtails, the smaller strain of flightless fruit flies, and maybe some pin-head crickets. I also have palmate larvs, and you are not kidding about how small! These food choices are the best to make up a balanced and varied diet. Let us know what is working best!

Best of luck!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
