My name is Andrew, and I'm a new member here. I was referred by axolotl.org, and am (obviously) interested in axolotl. I don't any yet, but am starting up a new tank as we speak. I was gifted one yesterday and it should be ready soon. I have always been interested in fish, and have had many, many tanks over the years, but when I saw the axolotl I knew I had to have one.

Welcome to the forum!

You say you were "gifted" an axolotl? Are you sure it's an axolotl then? Often times people here in the US are gifted/buy what they are told to be an axolotl, but is actually a larval tiger salamander.

Oh no, it's the tank I was gifted. The axolotl I have yet to get. I want the tank to cycle first.

I suppose I need to find someone to buy an axolotl from, too :D

Ahhaha! My mistake. It's very good to see you researching before going out and buying an axolotl! very responsible. The "for sale" section of the forum is a great place to start looking for an axolotl, when you're ready.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
