Hello, my interest in this site came about when I decided to finally do some research on the pet I've owned for 21 years, which is a California Newt. You know, brown on top and orange on the bottom which surprisingly is my favorite shoe color combination. Aside from that lame joke, I have to admit I never had the initial interest in newts. I'm a fish guy. I've had aquarium fish my entire life from guppies, to catfish, to silver dollars, to angelfish, to those jerks with the orange bodies and the black tails that love to jump out of the tank when I'm not home, etc., and I've always been fascinated by them. My newt has taken priority since he appeared sick a few weeks ago and I've realized how long its been in my life and now I'm ready to treat him with the best of care. Anyway, I figure that's enough for now.

Welcome to the forum. I'm no certain but I don't think I've heard of a Taricha documented as living that long. Anybody?

Welcome to the forum! If I am not mistaken, there is a thread out there on how long newts live in captivity, as far as we know. You might find your species mentioned there.

Good luck, and if you have questions, you are in the right place, so fire away! There are a lot of experts here able and willing to help, and many great care sheets available.

Have fun,
Critter Mom

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
