Is it normal for axy eggs to hatch out over an extended period? I bought 25 eggs, which have developed well and 3 babies have hatched - two 4 days ago, one 3 days ago. The eggs look ok and the babies inside move occasionally. Wondering if I need to put a heater in the water? Or a heating pad under the tank? It's pretty cold here atm

Yes , I think it is normal for them to hatch gradually, istead of all at once.

After about 10 days though they should all have hatched.

The ones that already have are probally the early birds. :ufo::ufo:

Depending on how cold it is will also affect their hatch rate. The colder it is the longer it will take. The best temperature I have found for hatching them seems to be around 66-68F or 19-20C.

No need to add anything to heat the water up, they'll all hatch within the next few days.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
