okay so he does this weird thing since i've put him in a new tank he swims up to the surface and does these really quick up down movements and almost touchs the top of the tank he keeps it up for about 30 seconds going up down up down from the surface of the water to say 4 cm up and he swims around the borders of the tank while he does this. why would he be doing this? anyone know :( is it normal? i''ve never seen him do it before i moved him into the new tank.

It probably your water conditions. Are you keeping the water clean and is it dechlorinated etc, filtered? Its definitely a stressful reaction prob due to some reaction to bad water quality such as high ammonia levels, low oxygen levels in the water or it could be he has a fungal infection on his gills thats preventing him from breathing properly . Normally they should gulp and then return back to the bottom of the tank pushing teh head out of the water hes probably under some sort of stress.

Do check your water parameters (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate) and also temperature. It has been getting warmer so axie troubles will be escalating.

When you set up the new tank, did you use the water from the old tank? Or new water? If you used new water, then you have given him quite a shock! This can be fatal, but he will probably recover. He is trying to get back to his old tank.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
