What are the best plants and gravel to use with axolotls?

The best gravel to use is NO GRAVEL (sorry for caps but must be noted and taken seriously) the best substrates to use are; sand, large river rocks or nothing at all.
Sand and river rocks thoroughly rinsed are astheticly pleasing but can be hard to clean(axolotls can be quite messy)
A bare bottomed tank is good for ease of cleaning but on the down side certain plants require planting to grow.

On the plants side of things Java fern is a very good plant if not the best plant for an Axolotl tank, it grows well in the tank condidtions (cold water and low light), and withstands the biting and thrashing that will inevitably happen while your axie goes about its buisness. Marimo moss balls are also a good choice IMO and gives your Axolotol something to push around the tank.

There are already lots of threads dedicated to good plants to use in an axolotl tank, a quick search of the forum will unearth a wealth of knowledge!

Hi Cliff, those moss balls sound like a really neat idea - could I ask where you might get them from? Are they common in most aquarium shops? (I'm in the UK)
Cheers!

Hey Benh,

The various species of Anubias are a good choice for Axolotl tanks as they tolerate the colder temps.

Have a look at this article that a few of us from caudata.org have written on axolotl-friendly aquascaping. It should give you plenty of inspiration and lots of information on what's safe and what's not.

Cheers! :D

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
