Ron from Minneapolis here. Been checking out the board for a while now and thought I'd make a short introduction. I've been interested in Newts and Salamanders since childhood, and used to keep and breed various lizards, snakes and Pac-Man Frogs. I've changed directions, and I'm much more interested in Salamanders and Frogs these days. Species I'm particularly interested in keeping in terraria are the Tiger Salamanders, Red-Backed Salamander(Plethodon cinereus), the Blue Spotted Salamander(Ambystoma laterale) and the Spotted Salamander(Ambystoma maculatum). I'm also mildly interested in the strange Mexican Axolotl, and hope to one day keep and breed them, as well as the Fire Salamander.

Everybody and their brother breeds axolotls. You shouldn't have any trouble getting a breeding colony going. The hardest part is getting it to stop! I (FINALLY) got rid of my last batch of babies.

Anyway, welcome to the forum!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
