Growing Gills

I recently started feeding my axolotl more frequently (every other day) with a greater quantity as well as a greater variety (earthworms and pellets) of food. He was also moved from a 25 gallon tank to a 40 gallon with better filtration. My question is: Would the above have anything to do with his gills getting longer and more "bushy." I looked at some older pictures of him and his gills have definitely grown. I did not know if that is usual or even a good thing because I get the impression this means he needs more surface area on his gills to pull more oxygen from the water. Maybe I am stupid...any input would be excellent.

THANKS!

I think the improved tank environment and nutrition allowed your axie to grow to full beauty and splendour.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
