Canada Law question

In Ontario, Ambystoma maculatum is a protected species; does anyone know whether importing captive bred spotted salamanders is also illegal? Do captive bred spotteds exist?

I have always wanted to keep this type of salamander, and will apply for a permit if no other option exists.

Any ideas?

I'd think that not only would you have trouble getting someone to import maculatum for you (there would be a lot of paperwork involved), they'd also be illegal. As far as I know, a protected species is a protected species and keeping one would not be a great idea.

Also, unfortunately, there's almost no chance of you finding any CB maculatum. The entire Ambystoma genus, save for axolotls, is rarely (and with difficulty) bred in captivity. The closest you would probably get would be captive hatched juveniles; young raised from wild collected eggs.

You could try applying for a permit; I don't know how it would go for you.

Thanks for the reply Nathan...that's unfortunately what I figured. Well, guess I'll have to focus on other Ambystoma.

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
