Hello everyone,

I have had Barney for about two weeks now.few days ago i noticed his gills were starting to curl forword so i decided to act quick and i bought him a new less powerful filter but overnight Barney got worse. His gills are very forward now and he hasn't eaten today. All the water conditions seem to be absolutely spot on. Do you think i should change the filter back to what it was before??
Please, please Help!!!

Worried mum :(

OK.

Whats the temperature of the water? What substrate do you have on the bottom of the tank?

What ARE the water parameters? What do you feed your axie? And finally, any possibility of a photo?

Ok,

so the water temperature normally is between 18.5 and 19.5 C. it has gone up to 20.5 last night but i got it down to 20 this morning and i'm slowly reducing it bacvk to 19 again using ise bottles.
There's sand in Barneys tank, few big rocks a hiding place and a couple of live plants.
I have tried to vary his diet so i have been giving him brine shrimp, bloodworms, beefheart and axolotl pellets.
The water:
Amonia 0
Nitrite 0.1
nitrate 0
pH 7

I will definately try to get a photo but he has been hiding most of the day makeing it rather impossible.

Nitrite? Hm. Had you cycled your tank before putting him in? Maybe the change of filter altered the beneficial bacteria content of the tank even if you had?

How big is he?

Also, just as a side note, beef heart would be more of a treat food.

I bought the tank about 6 weeks before i bought my axie and i kept a couple of my boyfriend's fish in it to get the bacteria going.
i've decided to put the old filter back in and see what happens...:(

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
