I have two axolotyls that I think are male and female, the female one has recently become much girthier than the male, she is probably twice his diameter though I know that they eat pretty much equally. Is this an early sign that she may be developing eggs?

Hello there, I have a female that has been looking decidedly fat over the last month or so, I think she is gearing up for egg laying! Like you, I feed all my axies the same amount, so this is the only thing I can put it down to.

I have a male in her tank with her now, waiting for the right moment when she's 'in the mood'!

The only other thing to watch out for is bloat, but I believe this shows as a general all over swelling, throat, limbs, everything, rather than a fat tum!

So yes, I reckon she's full of eggs! If you don't want lots of baby axies, it might be a good time to separate them if you think you have both sexes.

I took a picture of them both in a small holding container while I cleaned out their tank, if I can find a lead for the phone I will upload it to view here.

The pink one being my suspected female and the other the male.

Hi Steve,

My axolotol Lexi looks exactly like that from above too.

I was told that she is about a year and half old ive been told that this is the period when they reach full maturity?

Im looking for another female but finding it hard cause you cant really sex them when they are young.

Good luck with everything tho!

I would say looking at them that you guess correctly their sexes! She looks ready to burst! I wonder if that is uncomfortable for her?

How old are they? She has lovely fluffy gills. Are you hoping for the patter of tiny axie feet?

Im not sure of their ages, I bought them from a local store earlier this year and at the time both were similar sizes. Since getting them they have grown 2 inches in length and developed into the shapes you see now. With luck they will breed though I have yet to read up on the forum how they do it.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
