Hey guys Our axelotl is not eating at the moment,

I have noticed it has a white colored discoloration on its lips, It was small at the start and seems to have increased in size.

What should I do?

I have attached a photo, CHeers

That is a typical infectious stomatits, a bacterial infection in the mucosal lining in the mouth. This condition is transmissible to other axies so you would first have to isolate this sick axie. I would recommend you do so by fridging the axie in a tub.

The only way to treat bacterial stomatitis is by antibiotics. You would have to bring this axie to the vet.

Prognosis is generally good with prompt treatment. It should resolve quite uneventfully after a course of treatment.

Leaving it unattended obviously will make the prognosis guarded to poor as the condition can deteriorate into widespread septicaemia or even just wasting away from not being able to feed.

During this period, to stimulate feeding, it is best to feed live blackworms. They are very digestible, highly nutritious, easily taken into the mouth and attract axies by means of their scent and wriggliness.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
