I do believe my one female lucy has bloat. She's been getting worse over the last month and I've read a little. I could use any and all advice on the situation and will try to get some picks up soon.

i posted a picture in my newest album in my profile. It's pretty obvious which one it is. thanks all.

Hi,

I saw the photo of lucy in your gallery. I would say it has ascites and liver enlargement (hepatomegaly). There seems to be specific fluid accumulation in the abdominal region. Unlike generalised oedema (bloat), this is less likely to be caused by an infection but rather a liver or kidney problem.

The cause of this could be genetic, dietary related or certain toxins. There has been some papers that suggest virus infections could also cause this.

Treatment wise, fridging is a must. Veterinary intervention is also a must. The axie could have the excess fluid accumulation aspirated out via a needle. Extensive fluid therapy will help it substantially as well. If the cause is of a genetic nature, i would advise on euthanasia because it would be an ongoing, incurable condition.

Thank you very much for your insight.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
