Recently I've been feeding my axolotl pellets. Well, when I go to get the leftover pellets on the ground, my axolotl freaks out and does this weird "jerking" motion two or three times (and sometimes hits the wall of the tank!). He seems really scared and sometimes he won't move after doing this motion for a couple minutes.

Is there a way I can remove the pellets without scaring him?

Hi Rob.
It might just be a question of you Axolotl getting used to you're hand being in the tank? Try slow fluid movements, as anything sudden might frighten it.
I've just started to use chopsticks (mine are plastic and joined at the top, otherwise I think i'd be useless with separate ones lol) to feed my Axies pellets, and it's working out a lot better than when I used to drop them from the surface. I can just pick up any pellets he leaves with the chopsticks, much easier than using my hand. A Turkey Baster might work also.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
