Hey all, I am looking for a new project. I am planing to set up a vivarium for either newts or salamanders and I was hoping someone could suggest something semi-aquatic that can be bred in captivity. I have excess fruit flies and if they ate those that would be a bonus. I like the T. marmoratus best I think as far as looks goes. Something high contrast would be cool. Mostly aquatic would be my first choice, but we would go with anything at least semi-aquatic. I will use either a 55 gallon or a 150 (4x2x2) so space will not be an issue. I look forward to hearing some suggestions.

If colorful is a necessity, then T. marmoratus would be a good bet. If not, then P. waltl or crested newts might be nice for a big tank like that. Have you ruled out axolotls?

It seems like any species that is large enough for a tank that size is probably not going to take fruit flies.

I would suggest a group of E. bislineata. They are a streamside sal, and have always enjoyed fruit flies for me. The draw back: not a very visible pet, unless you use a red bulb, and watch them at night as I did. Good luck!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
