Hello, I'm michelle and this is my axolotl, Spike:

spikey.jpg

My other half got him for me as a birthday present. He got him from his hairdresser, whose son didn't have the time/space for him anymore.

Spike is about 8 years old, so middle aged!

I keep referring to him as a "him" because we were told that he is male. I've had a look in books but as he is my first axolotl I couldn't tell you if this was true or not!

Welcome!

Spike looks male to me. The plant is a bit in the way though - it's hard to tell for sure.

If you scroll down to the bottom of this page, there are comparison photos of both genders (the male's bulge to the cloaca is quite distinct).

Please feel free to post to the Axolotl 'Free for All' section of the forum if you are still having trouble ascertaining Spike's gender. I'm sure Spike won't mind being the center of attention ;).

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
