Had (The Host) our Axey for about 6 months. Everything was fine until about a week ago. We noticed that the gills on one side were turning to stumps and the face above the month seemed to be eroding away. I do not know what caused this.

I was feeding The Host feeder fish until I read this forum and found it wasn't the best idea. I have moved him out of this tank to standing water for now for fear of the tank being the problem. The water levels were fine, I was testing it every other day to make sure of it.

I have read on the forums for a couple nights now and have an idea of things I may need to do. However, I am unsure of my course of action because I do not know the problem - bacteria or fungus.

Please help this newb save The Host. Here are some pictures of the condition. These are all after pics of when it is sick.. I have a before pic that I am having trouble receiving. Will upload later.

Please bring your axie to a vet. It is likely to have a necrotising bacterial infection. Be careful when handling your axie. It is best to avoid direct skin contact. Some of these infections are zoonotic and can be transmitted to humans.

You may like to fridge your axie. Do not give salt baths.

Cheers

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
