Hello everyone, I'm a senior in college interning at an educational museum in Ohio. I am responsible for procuring two different amphibians for our new exhibit about watersheds. So far, I have been able to get an American Bullfrog, but have had no luck with finding mudpuppies (Necturus maculosus).

It looks like this is a great place to get information on Mudpuppies, and I'm hoping to eventually be able to post more, especially to look for advice on their care as well as looking for breeders and suppliers.

Looking forward to advice,

Bryan

Welcome, Bryan! Unfortunately, nobody breeds mudpuppies. It's possible, but requires large enclosures and cold temperatures. The biological supply companies sometimes sell wild-caught ones, but they are often unhealthy. Is there any chance that you could catch one locally? It's more likely to be healthy than a purchased one is.

Thanks for your reply. That's certainly understandble. It looks like catching one locally would be our best bet. I'm not exactly "outdoorsy" but I'm certainly willing to try.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
