So I have pretty much set my heart on getting one =] I've been looking at pictures and videos non stop but I was wondering if it is bad if I only get one? I see them often in pairs or more and I did read somewhere that it is best to get a couple. I'm going to college next year and I am only allowed a fifteen gallon tank and I don't think two would be very happy in my 30inX12inX12in. I'm not even too sure one will be. If I can't take care of one(or a couple) properly and be a good home I'll just have to wait until I am in a position to. I would hate to have one and it be cramped or lonly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You! - Stone

Hi Stone,

Your axolotl will do fine on its own. The main problem with keeping a single axolotl is that axolotl keepers can never stop with just one. ;)

Considering that a healthy axolotl can live 20 years (and more?), you will have plenty of time later to get a friend for him/her when you have more space.

Thank you so much =]
I'm super excited, I can't wait to get my first one. I plan on getting more later when I have more room. They are so adorable.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
