So recently I took some live plants out of my aquarium because I thought my axolotl was eating the stuff inside the containers. When I took the plants out i found that the material wasn't rocks at all, I could crush them with a fingernail. However, my axolotl appears to have some kind of lump at the end of his body right before the tail. Sometimes it seems to be smaller or larger, or sometimes I can't see it at all. I'm not sure what the gender of the axolotl is, so it may just be his male body parts (if it is a male) but I don't want to take any chances. He also has not had any decrease in appetite or production of waste at all, so I hope he is fine but I'm not sure could somebody please straighten me out?

Hi,

I´m not sure if I understood you right, but just before axies do a poo, the cloaka swells. Maybe that is what you´ve seen.

Male axies do have a big cloaka, as big as a cherry and the cloaka of female axies are more smallish like a pea.

If your axie is pooing and eating i would say there is no problem.
And agree it could just be your axies cloaca

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
