Hi guys,

So, i set up my tank last week in preparation for my new axolotls. I have a 36"X18"X18" tank, sand substrate, running a Fluval 2 plus filter with a homemade spray bar. i have a couple of questions:
1. my filter came with 2 different pads, 1 black carbon filter and 1 white polyester filter. which should i be using?

2. The tank itself has been set up since Sunday yet it is still slightly murky, the chemical balance is good and the only thing living in there right now are the plants. I assume this is probably due to using a sand substrate but was wondering what to do to clear it up?

3. If there are any Londoners here, where do you get your food from? I've pre-emptively ordered some from online stores but was wondering if you guys use any particular stores

I only got the white polyester filters when i bought my Fluval 2 Plus, so that's the ones i use.

The water will be murky the first time you fill up a new tank with sand substrate. So what i did was to fill up the tank and then remove most of the murky water and refill the tank again. But it will probably settle in a few days and clear up after a few water changes.

I'm feeding my axolotls with frozen shrimps bought at a local store and regular earthworms :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
