Hi,
My axolotl has been getting thinner and thinner and I'm worried that she's got internal parasites.I've been advised from this site to get her poo analysed but I don't know what vets can do that (the ones I've called say that they can't help). Does anyone know a good vet to go to in Sydney (city area)?

Hi Melissa,

It is best to let the vet examine and plan a course of treatment for your axie. Axies losing body condition can be due to many causes including internal parasites.

Here is a list of vets. Herp Vets in Australia

If parasites are a concern and faecal examination is not possible, you can do a therapy trial whereby the vet administer a single dose of fenbendazle +/- metronidazloe +/- anti-inflammatories. That would be able to rid most internal worms and protozoa.

Most importantly rule out all other common causes. Water temperature and parameters need to be well monitored. What types of food do you feed your axie? Its best to feed plenty of live worms.

Cheers.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
