Can axolotls be fed slugs or snails de-shelled ?

Re: Worms for axie?

Yes. Nutritionally wise they make good snacks.

However, be careful with where you source the snails and slugs. Snails and slugs have a capacity to accumulate environmental toxins (pesticides, herbicides) as well as being a notorious carrier of parasites. They can introduce pathogens to your tank environment.

In addition, unlike feeder fish or shrimp, it is extremely difficult to quarantine snails and slugs because they don't display outwardly obvious signs of illness. A sick snail or slug will still look and behave like any other. This makes quarantine difficult as well.

You can try soaking the snails/slugs in some clean water for 30min prior feeding to help purge them but this is not a foolproof plan to rid of all the other nasties they can carry.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
