We are trying to learn all we can and make an educated decision on filters. We plan on setting up a 20-30 gal aquatic environment for 2-3 juvenile Neurergus strauchii and a second identical or nearly identical set up for 2-3 juvenile Neurergus kaiseri. Our question is what is too much as far as gph? We found several filter that range from 80 to 250 gph flow.
Do you all recommend a minimal of 3 stage filtration? Are filters like anything else, you get what you pay for?

Hello Tim. I run a few aquaria with external filters. They do +/- a 6 times change of the volume each hour. I'm happy with this.

In such big volumes of water and with so few animals per tank, filtration shouldn´t be a concern at all. I would only care about providing a current which they need, but not about the actual filtration capacity, as it´s almost impossible that with the apropriate maintenance, the nitrites and ammonia will ever reach dangerous levels.

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
